on the road again

Incase you haven't noticed the drop off in posts lately, I thought I'd get you up to speed on the future of this site. I'm currently on a road trip across country from NY to LA, with a "layover" in my home state of Oklahoma. Although I loved working at Firstborn in NY and learned TONS of new things, the crashing of the California ocean finally was too strong to resist.

I'm taking a few weeks off, recouping and creating a redesign of my portfolio. Once I'm out in LA I plan on getting back in gear and creating a lot of new tutorials of techniques I've learned over the past few months. Until then, questions or comments on older posts are always welcome.

So I just packed up and left my whole life that was in NY. I'm currently sittin in a hotel in Maryland after the first leg of my cross country road trip to LA. After a few hours on the road there's quite a few things i'll take away with me as things to remember. Here's a select few.

You're not as good as you think you are.
You're better than you give yourself credit for.
There is no substitute for time.
Don't let it fester.
The clock is ticking.
Do what you wish you could be doing.
Your job is better than a lot of others people.
It's not a sacrifice unless it stings.
You keep moving until you find home.

busy few weeks

Things have cooled off here over the past month or so as a result of me being really busy. No worries, I've recorded some more videos and should have them up soon mainly comprised of after effects tutorials since those seem to be most popular.

Although there haven't been new videos here have been quite a few comments recently, most of them spam. Since it's Friday (spam day), I thought I'd share my favorite spam comment with all of you.

Getting that great job is harder than ever, and there's tons of competition vying for those open spots. Here's 3 categories that you should think about when creating your new portfolio.

Usability

start with a plan, even if it's just a sketch
good contrast, easy to find navigation
no more than 3 clicks
make it about the work (KISS)
design it for your audience (if mom and dad can use it, you should be fine)

What goes in it?

only show off your best work
put your picture in it
show a range of work
have your name in it (don't be some mysterious guy)
show what you like to do more of
contact info (duh!)

Tech specs

SEO, alt Text on your images
save as for web
keep the content above the fold
make it big - standard sizes are 800x600 but more often 1024x768
