on the road again

Incase you haven't noticed the drop off in posts lately, I thought I'd get you up to speed on the future of this site. I'm currently on a road trip across country from NY to LA, with a "layover" in my home state of Oklahoma. Although I loved working at Firstborn in NY and learned TONS of new things, the crashing of the California ocean finally was too strong to resist.

I'm taking a few weeks off, recouping and creating a redesign of my portfolio. Once I'm out in LA I plan on getting back in gear and creating a lot of new tutorials of techniques I've learned over the past few months. Until then, questions or comments on older posts are always welcome.

So I just packed up and left my whole life that was in NY. I'm currently sittin in a hotel in Maryland after the first leg of my cross country road trip to LA. After a few hours on the road there's quite a few things i'll take away with me as things to remember. Here's a select few.

You're not as good as you think you are.
You're better than you give yourself credit for.
There is no substitute for time.
Don't let it fester.
The clock is ticking.
Do what you wish you could be doing.
Your job is better than a lot of others people.
It's not a sacrifice unless it stings.
You keep moving until you find home.

linear workflow in maya

I must admit..this one is a little foggy still. The explination is a little convoluted and confusing, but then again so is linear workflow. I'm planning on digging in soon and sharing my findings on how to get it all set up as well as the benefits. Until then check out this explanation.

After having worked on my largest project to date, I realized that having some sort of automated pipeline manager would have been IMMENSELY helpful. I've heard about openPipeline for a while, but never really had a project where I needed to use it. I'll def. be giving this a shot though on the next one!

I don't really use Max much if I can help it, but Chad goes into detail about how you can setup openEXR files and how to use frischluft's depth of field plugin as well as Real Smart Motion Blur. If you've already bought the trapcode plugins, these should be next on your list!

I'm planning on making a Maya & openEXR tutorial soon, so stay tuned.

CS4 media encoder sucks, so what's a motion designer to do??! Watch this video and find out a better way to render your projects. It's pretty simple, I just never thought to do it until someone reminded me.
